Cleaning Your Toilet

Updated: Sep 15, 2022

If you haven't read our post, Cleaning Your Bathroom, you'll want to stop now and go read that. If you are like me and you can't stand the internet telling you what to do you probably ignored me and are still interested in reading. That's ok, rebel.

Note to Rebels: In the post mentioned earlier, I talk about the importance of clearing the room of clutter before cleaning. This is a must-do if you are looking to clean efficiently.

Step 1: Start with dusting any shelves around the toilet area including the toilet paper holder. Toilet paper creates a lot of lint so it's important not to forget this area or it's the first thing you'll see when you sit down.

Step 2: Choose your cleaning chemical for disinfecting the outside of your toilet (avoid bleach, we'll get into this in a later post) and use paper towels to wipe down the tank starting at the top and working your way down. Usually, the tank isn't very icky so I always start there.

Step 3: Taking care of the base from back to front. Usually, the base is forgotten about or for most people very hard to reach. Keeping the base clean reduces smells and is a really important aspect of cleaning your toilet.

Step 4: Now we are moving to the more "grimy" areas of your toilet. We will clean the lid first and then the rim of the bowl again with paper towels.

Step 5: We finish with a toilet bowl cleaner and a good scrub brush. Every toilet in your home should have one. If you have a heavy calcium ring try picking up a pumice stone and scrubbing. Make sure the pumice stone and porcelain are always wet or you will scratch the porcelain.

And voila! You have a professionally cleaned toilet. The process is quick and as you practice you'll become faster and faster and notice key things you're missing along the way. Cleaning is all about growth. It's not going to be perfect the first time.
